East of Scotland Premier League, Saturday 6th January 2007

Edinburgh University 0 Whitehill Welfare 1

Welfare should have been ahead after nine minutes but were denied a penalty when Fusco brought down Christie from behind but amazingly was yellow carded for ‘diving’,

Pryde then sent over a corner kick to the back post which Woodburn headed against the outside of the post. Lee then produced a cross from the left which McIntosh headed just over.

Welfare took the lead in the 20th minute when a forward ball to McIntosh in the centre circle was head-flicked on to the alert Walker. He darted between the two University central defenders and with only Ellison to beat, neatly lobbed the ball into the net over the exposed goalkeeper.

A superb cross from Lee seemed certain to be headed into the net by Walker but the striker did not connect and the danger was cleared before Andy Doig swept a Lee cross wide of the target.

Whitehill almost increased their advantage immediately after the interval when McIntosh hit a net-bound shot with Ellison grounded but the ball rebounded off the back of Munro before Doig headed high over the bar.

With 20 minutes remaining Chris Woods was introduced to the University line-up wide on the left as coach Samuel played with three strikers. Woods made an immediate impact with his forceful runs and he fired over a low cross which Hazeldine hit first time directly at McGurk.

Woods himself had an effort which again McGurk dealt with competently then another Woods cross was headed over by Munro as Whitehill held on to gain the victory which cements them into second place in the League, six points adrift of Spartans but, crucially, the Rosewell side have two games in hand.
