East of Scotland Premier League, Saturday 6th October 2007
Whitehill Welfare 1 Coldstream 0
Welfare made life difficult for
themselves in this match with a lack-lustre display.
Chances were created but not taken with the absence of
Scott Gormley through injury being keenly felt by Welfare.
Enforced changes from the side
which triumphed at Lossiemouth gave a slightly disjointed
look to the starting eleven. The aforementioned Gormley
was replaced in attack by Andy Doig with Stevie Swanson
and Andy Christie filling vacated midfield places. Richie
Wilkes came in at right back for Allan Cornett who was on
the bench.
There were many chances for both sides in the first
half and Brown almost opened the scoring for Coldstream
with a header. Welfare had a real let-off when Agnew hit
the bar. The goal which proved to be the winner came in
the 39th minute. A Kevin Lee throw in was
worked inside to Kidd. The ball was then played to Doig
who worked a nice one-two with Swanson before crossing for
Calvey who sent a superb diving header past Lumsden in the
Coldstream goal.
The second half was scappy with one or two close
calls at either end and Welfare coming closest with
Lumsden forced into a point blank save from Calvey.
Welfare will play much better this season and lose
out, so a welcome three points from an under-par
performance.
