Qualifying Cup Final, Sunday
8th May 2005
Whitehill Welfare 0 Edinburgh City 0
(Whitehill won 4-3 on penalties)
A
disappointing afternoon for the fans of both side who had
witnessed thirteen goals in the two League matches between
the sides this season and even more so the neutrals who
turned out hoping to see an action-packed match.
Welfare
had the ball in the net after two minutes only for Darren
Whyte to be penalised for a handball before Colin McDonald
slotted home. There was a lack of clear cut chances in the
first half which ended on a sour note when City's Young
was shown a straight red for a lunge at Richie Johnstone.
The second
half was slightly better than the first. Kenny Young saw a
shot tipped over by Mackintosh, Richie Johnstone skimmed
the bar with a free kick effort and Birrell was denied by
a good save from the keeper diving low to his right. At
the other end City found McGurk difficult to beat with the
keeper pulling off a point blank save and another effort
kicked off the line. With 12 minutes left Noon almost
broke the deadlock when he lifted a shot over McGurk only
to see his effort bounce off the top of the bar and out.
Extra time
saw a tired display from both sides and onto the almost
inevitable penalty shoot out. Jardine was first for City
and put his shot wide of McGurk's right post. The next
seven kicks were converted with Hogg, Jamieson, Martin and
McDonald respectively all making no mistake. Up stepped
City's Nye, knowing he couldn't afford to miss. He blazed
his kick high over the bar and Welfare mobbed keeper
McGurk in celebration.
