Colin
Campbell Sports League Cup Final, Saturday 14th
April 2007
Annan Athletic 0 Whitehill Welfare 1
NINE-man Welfare lifted the Colin Campbell League Cup for
the 11th time at Islecroft Stadium.
They had Wayne McIntosh and Sean Woodburn sent off in the
space of six minutes and played the last 16 minutes two
short.
Co-manager Rab Finlay described the decisions as terrible
but gave his players 110 per cent.
"I can't praise the lads enough. It was bad enough playing
an in-form team with 11 men but to go down to nine it
looked all over. But the lads were great and Annan never
really looked like beating us."
He added: "I have only got massive praise for the lads who
deserved this great win and stuck to our game-plan."
But they got the vital break with four minutes left and
top scorer and man of the match Nicky Walker broke through
the home defence and slotted home a 12 yarder into the
bottom corner of the net.
Despite a late surge by Annan, Whitehill held out and
clinched the trophy that they haven't won since 2003.
Whitehill controlled the first half of the game and had a
goal chalked off in the opening stages for an
infringement.
It was McIntosh that had the first good chance when his
tremendous shot from 20 yards sailed inches past the post.
Then Walker had a great chance in the 38th minute but
fluffed his shot on goal.
Then in the 69th minute McIntosh who had been posing all
sorts of problems for the Annan defence was sent off for a
second yellow and a minute later Annan's Grant Parker had
their best chance but blasted the ball over the bar.
When Woodbrn was sent off in the 74th minute it looked all
over but then with time running out a long ball upfield
was fastened on to by Walker, who beat a defender before
shooting past the Annan keeper.
