Edinburgh Athletic 1 Whitehill Welfare
2
Welfare booked a quarter final place
against Lothian Thistle with a narrow and hard-fought win
over Edinburgh Athletic. Their first goal came from swift
breakaway in the 15th minute. A Selkirk corner was thumped
clear to Swanson on the right wing who sprinted clear
before playing the ball into the path of Kidd, who
took a touch and placed the ball away from the keeper.
Whitehill's second goal came just after the hour mark when
Gary Calvey struck home a contender for goal of the
season. Scott Gormley did well on the right wing before
sending a cross into the near post. Calvey had his
back to goal but launched into an acrobatic overhead kick
and he connected perfectly to send the ball into the top
corner of the net.
Athletic reduced the deficit with four minutes remaining
through Bernardi and Welfare had McGurk to thank
for a last minute save which would have sent the tie into
extra time had Chisholm found the target.
Whitehill Welfare:
McGurk, Cornett, Lee, Johnston, Woodburn, Kidd, Swanson, Pryde,
Gormley, Calvey, McDonagh. Subs: Doig,
Cairns, Wilkes, Ribio, Russell.
