Welfare fell behind to a hotly disputed free-kick award just outside the
penalty area in the 25th minute. A
through ball saw Bobby Clyde miscue and Neil Irvine
moved to try and intercept. There was minimal
contact between the players but
Irvine went down and a free-kick was awarded.
Clyde was incensed at the
manner in which
Irvine went down and was booked for his remonstrations with the referee. To
rub salt in the Welfare wounds
Gerrard curled in
the direct free-kick to leave McGurk with no chance.
Welfare fought back and a long goal kick from McGurk was controlled and
fed out to Young by Forrester. The wee man spotted a
good run into the box by Curran and a neat through
ball was then hooked across goal and as the
University defence hesitated, in stepped
Whyte to score from close range.
Edinburgh
regained the lead when a long through ball saw
Walker
surge in on goal after Lee had slipped. Ross
Johnston tried to close him down but
Walker managed a shot on goal which McGurk could any parry straight back to
the forward who coolly lobbed the ball over the
keeper into the net.
The student side scented a victory and pushed forward in an attempt to
kill the game and but for some near misses,
determined defending and a couple of good saves from
McGurk, they could have been out of sight.
As is often the case when a team fails to finish a side off, the
inevitable happens and Welfare leveled the match
with five minutes left for play. A Welfare attack
down the left was broken up and the ball hacked down
to the half-way line. It fell to Bobby Clyde who
sent a high floating ball over the University
defence. As the visitors stood claiming for offside,
in nipped Johnny Baigrie to beat the out rushing
keeper and he headed the ball into the path of
Forrester. The striker had the easiest of tasks to side-foot the ball into the
empty goal. Both sides had chances to win the game
with
Edinburgh
hitting the post and Forrester failing to hook home
in the dying seconds.
