East of Scotland Premier League, Saturday 19th April 2008
Whitehill Welfare 2 Selkirk 0
Whitehill's title hopes improved with a hard-fought
win over Selkirk while Spartans were going down 2-1
at Preston Athletic.
Scott Gormley returned to the starting line-up with
Andrew Kidd dropping onto the bench and Allan
Cornett replacing Liam McKenna from the side who
lost 3-2 to Edinburgh City. Welfare had first half
chances hitting the bar and a few shots from
distance which missed the target. Likewise for
Selkirk who were dangerous on the break, although
their cause wasn't helped by injuries to key
personnel.
After a
goal-less first half, Welfare struck twice in the
opening five minutes of the second half. In the 48th
minute a cross from McIntosh was fumbled by the
keeper and the ball dropped to Gormley two yards out
and he swept the ball home for one of the easiest
goals he'll ever score. Moments later, a McDonagh
cross was swung over to McIntosh from the left to
the right and a low centre was flicked home by
Calvey to make it 2-0.
Welfare had
other chances to score more but were unable to take
them and instead they closed out the game to make
sure of the points after the mistakes made in the
previous game with Edinburgh City.
