Premier League, Saturday 14th
October 2006
Whitehill Welfare 1 Heriot
Watt University 0
Whitehill maintained their title challenge with a
narrow 1-0 win over Heriot Watt but the scoreline
fails to tell the domination exerted by the home
side.
Wayne McIntosh should have had Welfare 2-0 in front
after 15 minutes but shot wide early on and then hit
the post. The home fans were groaning again when
Wilkes set himself up from 30 yards but his shot
crashed off the same post which had earlier denied
McIntosh.
Just before the
break, McIntosh was put through by a Wilkes header
and with time to spare, he somehow managed to blaze
his shot over the bar. A moment later Nicky Walker
made a lung-bursting run down the right wing, only
for Barr to narrow his shooting scope and force him
to cross in Wilkes direction only for Considine to
intercept.
It took until the 79th
minute before Welfare finally broke the deadlock.
Kevin Lee curled in a free kick from the left the
resultant clearance landed for Walker who crossed
for Andy Doig who sent a headed effort in at
the keeper’s near post.
Welfare’s pressure
had brought it’s reward but the Students almost
equalised in the last minute when Letson's corner
was headed against the bar by Leask.
