Whitehill Welfare 4 Dalbeattie Star 1
Whitehill held
onto top spot in the East League with an easy 4-1
win over a Dalbeattie side who have never beaten
Welfare. After surviving early pressure playing into
a strong wind, Welfare went ahead in the 15th minute
when Scott Gormley was well placed on the left side
of the six yard box to squeeze a shot into the net
between the keeper and the post. In the 29th minute
the lead doubled when a Pryde corner was blasted
into the far corner of the net thanks to a superb
volley from Calvey.
Dalbeattie
worked hard to use the wind to their advantage and
pulled a goal back 10 minutes before half time and
Welfare had Ryan McGurk to thank for keeping them
ahead when he tipped a goal-bound shot over the bar.
The second
half began with McGurk pulling out another superb
stop and after being stung into action, Welfare
responded with their third goal in the 49th minute.
The ball fell perfectly for Gormley on the edge of
the 18 yard line and he hit a powerful left-foot
half volley to beat the keeper on his left side. A
minute later the Dalbeattie centre-half was sent
packing for a last man foul on Kidd. Welfare
continued to press and then the visitors were
reduced to nine men on the hour mark when their
number 7 went in high with his studs catching
Gormley on the side of his calf muscle. The ref had
little option for such a crude challenge.
Welfare should
have made more of their numerical advantage but it
was Dalbeattie who missed two gilt-edged chances to
salvage the game as the home side went dangerously
into auto-cruise mode. The introduction of Swanson
livened up the right side of the park and his pace
was a real headache to the visitors. It was Swanson
who completed the scoring after taking a
Wilkes pass and going directly for goal and netting
from a tight angle with a powerful right foot shot.
A good overall
performance from Welfare to set themselves up nicely
for next week's cup tie in the Highlands.
