East of Scotland Premier League, Tuesday 24th April 2007
Whitehill Welfare 1
Edinburgh University 2
Wayne
McIntosh and Nicky Walker both received early yellow
cards, Wayne for a late tackle and Nicky for dissent. The
first real chance fell to the Uni when Shaun Milligan cut
the ball back and Stephen Thompson hit a low shot which
was blocked.
Whitehill took the lead in the 25th minute when a through
ball to Wayne McIntosh in the left hand channel was
well controlled by the striker and he cut inside the Uni
defender Mark Cathcart and hit a right foot angular shot
into the net from 10 yards.
The
students equalised in the 60th minute when an Andy Howat
shot was blocked but the Whitehill defence failed to clear
their lines and Stephen Maxwell followed up to fire
the ball into the net from 10 yards.
Shortly
afterwards Wayne McIntosh appeared to be held in the Uni
penalty box but despite loud appeals there was no spot
kick. Wayne then used "foul and abusive language" towards
the referee who had no hesitation in producing a straight
red card.
The
students then created some chances with accurate crosses
but the Whitehill defence rallied until eight minutes from
time when Howat received the ball on the left
touchline and used his pace to find a way into the penalty
box where he placed a low shot under the body of Kevin
Swain at the near post.
Andy
Malone almost equalised in the final minute when his
powerful header skimmed the top of the University
crossbar.
It is understood that Wayne McIntosh
was asked to report to the referee after the match along
with club official Peter McGauley and was advised that he
would be reported for a second offence warranting a red
card.
