Scottish Cup 2nd Round, Saturday 27th October 2007

Whitehill Welfare 6 Golspie Sutherland 1

Whitehill proved too strong for Highlanders Golspie Sutherland in their Scottish Cup 2nd Round clash. A higher than normal attendance turned out with close to 350 inside the ground which included a good travelling support from the north.

Any hopes Golspie had of causing an upset were extinguished after less than 15 minutes with Welfare cruising into a 3-0 lead inside 12 minutes. Only 4 minutes had passed when Lee crossed for Swanson to send a looping header into the net. In the 7th minute, a superb curving free kick from Pryde was met at the far post by Johnston and his right foot volley flew high into the net. The visitors looked stunned and when Pryde took a corner on the right in the 12th minute, Kidd was allowed to rise unmarked to power a header home to make it 3-0.

Welfare had killed the tie and played possession football until another foray upfield in the 38th minute saw Johnston head home from a Pryde cross to make it 4-0.

A goal from Keveran in the 50th minute brought loud cheers from the high-spirited Golspie fans. This goal only served to slightly anger Whitehill who went straight up the park to make it 5-1 through a Doig penalty after McDonagh had been upended.

A minute later Gormley made it 6-1 when he intercepted a slack pass and sprinted away from the Golspie defence before clinically finishing with his right foot.

The home side could have added to their lead but scorned the chances they created. When Whitehill won a penalty in the 87th minute, skipper Johnston stepped up hoping to claim a hat-trick but blasted the ball over.

An easy win for Welfare who didn't produce the form which blew away Annan last week but to be fair they didn't need to and won comfortably all the same. Downside - needless bookings for Swanson, Gormley, Kidd and Cornett which could rule them out of potential glamour ties in the round ahead.
