Premier League, Saturday 28th October 2006

Whitehill Welfare 1 Edinburgh City 0

The city fans trooping out dejectedly at the end would no doubt be feeling robbed but on the balance of play, Welfare just about deserved to edge the game and take all three points.

Nicky Walker was first to threaten for Welfare with an early run on goal only to see Armitt deny him with his legs. Ex-Welfare man Kenny Young has been in fine goalscoring form and he was next to try his luck with a rasping shot which McGurk held comfortably.

There was a moment of controversy mid-way through the half when Woodburn headed towards goal. The ball appeared to be well over the line when McLauchlan headed it out but with the referee badly positioned, he was not in a position to award a goal.

Noon was causing Welfare some problems at the back and chipped McGurk only to see his shot go wide and then Ross saw a net-bound shot headed off the line by Lee.

Into the second half and Welfare should have went ahead in the 52nd minute but McIntosh saw his header come off the bar to the frustration of the home fans.

The game looked to be heading for a draw after a series of missed opportunities for both sides when Welfare were awarded a free kick on the half way line. Johnston was ready to take the kick but was encouraged upfield by Lee. A long ball was launched by Lee to Johnston and his header across goal saw minimal contact from McIntosh before it broke to Malone right on the line and he made sure it went in to the delight of the home fans.

Newspaper reports incorrectly credited Carlin with the goal - it was Malone!

Whitehill Welfare: McGurk, Cornett, Lee, Johnston, Woodburn, McDonagh, Christie, Wilkes, McIntosh, Doig, Walker. Subs: Hart, Fisher, McEwan, Carlin, Swain.
