Ladies Team History

Whitehill Welfare LFC has previously been know as Hailes United, Edinburgh Star, Tynecastle, and most recently, Bonnyrigg Rose. The team was founded in 1985 as a youth project, playing 5-a-sides against other youth groups. In 1986 it joined the Scottish Women's Football Association's (SWFA) newly formed 11-a-side Second Division League. The second division was a national league, travelling as far north as Aberdeen and as far west as Irvine. The team gained promotion to the First Division in 1991 as runners-up. After four seasons in the First Division, the team were relegated to the Second in 1995. The SWFA then changed the league set-up to a Premier League, below which were regional based leagues. The team play in the East League, although this still includes travel to Inverness and Elgin.

The team's successes include winning the Verona Cup in Italy three out of four times, the last being in 1993. They have also won a tournament in Spain and travelled to Sweden, Belgium, Denmark and Northern Ireland to compete in tournaments. Domestically, the team got to the final of the Scottish Cup in 1994, being beaten 3-0 by Newtongrange.

Plans for the future include becoming heavily involved in Whitehill's anticipated Youth Development programme, and are keen to start a Whitehill Welfare Girls FC. Manager Sheena McKenzie and Treasurer Bertie MacLean have both gained SFA 'C' Licence certificates with Sheena hoping soon to gain her 'B' Licence. As with everyone at Whitehill, the Ladies Club are keen to become a community based club, encouraging local girls to become involved in the club's successes.
